What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure which, using a device with micro-needles, causes slight trauma to the surface of the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving the overall quality of the skin.

Microneedling can be combined with the administration of vitamins, with different indications, which enhance the mechanical effect of the treatment.

Number of sessions required

The number of microneedling sessions depends on the initial condition of the skin and the desired results, and can vary between 3 and 5 sessions, at 30-day intervals.

How long do microneedling results last?

There is no exact length of time for the results to last, as the improvements in skin quality are due to the stimulation of collagen production in the skin during the healing process. The skin continues in its natural aging process, starting from a better level. After the initial treatment plan has been completed, 1 session every 6 months is recommended to maintain the results.

He obtained his Master’s degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine in Lisbon and then specialized in Otorhinolaryngology at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, where he joined the teaching staff as a free assistant. His training in Otorhinolaryngology had a strong component in head and neck surgery, but also in Rhinology, Otology and Pediatric Laryngology.

At the end of his internship, he dedicated himself to further training in functional and aesthetic surgery of the nose (Rhinoplasty and Rhino-septoplasty). During this time, he did an internship in head and neck oncology at the Otorhinolaryngology department of the IPO in Lisbon and an internship in otology and skull base at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. He subsequently undertook several fellowships with world-renowned surgeons in the field of Rhinoplasty / facial plastic surgery, namely:

Doctor with a Master’s Degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (FCML), specialist in Radioncology at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology, Francisco Gentil (IPO).

Between 2010-2013 he worked at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Texas, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the National Cancer Institute (INCA) in Rio de Janeiro. In 2014 she was a Hospital Assistant at the IPO and since 2015 she has been a Hospital Assistant at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central (CHULC). In 2020 she graduated in Aesthetic Medicine from the Portuguese Society of Aesthetic and Cosmetic Medicine (SPMEc).

Although his passion for Aesthetic Medicine first arose from strengthening the self-esteem of cancer patients – oncoaesthetics – he now has a huge passion for the skin, our largest organ, and for looking at it as a whole, especially preventatively.

WITH MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling is a minimally invasive and safe treatment with a very low complication rate. The treatment must be carried out by a doctor with experience in this type of treatment and all precautions must be followed to the letter.

Before the treatment begins, an anesthetic cream is applied, making this a very well-tolerated procedure for our patients.

The results of Microneedling appear gradually and progressively as you carry out new sessions. At the end of the first session, you’ll already notice smoother, brighter skin, but once you’ve completed the treatment plan, the results will be more noticeable.

There is no set time as the improvements in skin quality are due to the stimulation of collagen production in the skin during the healing process. The skin continues in its natural aging process, starting from a better level. After the initial treatment plan has been completed, 1 session every 6 months is recommended to maintain the results.

As a rule, the treatment is based on a protocol of 4 or more sessions at 1-month intervals, varying according to the initial state of your skin and the progression of results. Maintenance sessions are recommended every six months.

Because it depends on the initial condition of the skin, the number of sessions required and the vitamin cocktail applied, the price of Microneedling varies. At your first consultation, you will be presented with a treatment plan tailored entirely to you and the costs involved.

There is no minimum age for the treatment and it can be done whenever there are problems to be treated such as dull skin, enlarged pores, scars, spots, wrinkles and stretch marks.

The treatment can be carried out at any time of the year, however, as it acts by causing superficial trauma to the skin, the fall and winter months are considered the ideal time to carry out this procedure, when sun exposure is reduced.

It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as patients with autoimmune diseases and active acne. Specific health conditions should be assessed by our medical team.

Microneedling is safe, generally well tolerated and has a low rate of complications. However, redness, swelling, redness and burning can occur, effects that disappear after a few days.
