Nasolabial Folds

What is the Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds, popularly known as “Chinese moustaches”, are creases that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth and are part of the group of static wrinkles. They begin to be visible from the age of 30 and gradually become more marked over the years. The “Chinese moustache” is one of the most frequent complaints and is a source of great dissatisfaction and embarrassment.

How are they formed?

As time goes by, the decrease in collagen production, hyaluronic acid and fat levels in the face contribute to the skin becoming thinner and sagging. As a result of the loss of volume in the malar region (cheekbones), the skin sags and exerts force on the furrows, making them more obvious. In general, the “Chinese moustache” becomes more pronounced after the age of 30/35, although it can happen earlier. It’s important to focus on treatment and prevention from the moment the creases become visible to prevent them from becoming deeper.
