What is Botox®?
Botox® Botulinum toxin, or botulinum toxin, is a purified protein that reduces the activity of the muscles in the face that have the greatest force of contraction and cause the so-called dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and “crow’s feet”. Although it has become known worldwide for its rejuvenating effects, botulinum toxin is also used to treat various diseases.
How does Botox® work to treat wrinkles?
The action of Botox® is related to muscle action. When we make certain expressions (smile, laugh, look in admiration, look angry, etc.), the facial muscles contract, causing the skin to gain wrinkles which, if left untreated, become deeper over the years.
When injected at strategic points, botulinum toxin temporarily weakens the action of the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, making the skin smoother, brighter and more youthful.
What kind of wrinkles does Botox® treat?
Botox® only treats dynamic wrinkles:
- Forehead wrinkles
- Glabella (between the eyebrows)
- Periocular wrinkles ("crow's feet")
- Wrinkles on the back of the nose ("bunny lines")

The myth of the swollen and paralyzed face with Botox®
We all grew up hearing that Botox® deforms and paralyzes the face and lips. This claim is nothing more than a myth.
Botox® is not applied to areas such as the lips, cheekbones or Chinese moustache and therefore could not be responsible for the dreaded exaggerated results that we hear so much about (puffy face, Botox lips®lips, cat face, etc).
Botox® only acts on dynamic wrinkles. When applied properly and in the right quantities, Botox® softens expression wrinkles, giving a very natural result.
Difference between Botox® and Hyaluronic Acid
Although Botox® and Hyaluronic Acid are both substances used to combat and prevent skin ageing, they act differently and have different indications.
Botox® works by relaxing the muscle. By reducing muscle movement, Botox® reduces their contraction, which is what forms the wrinkle. In practice, Botox® treats dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contraction – forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows), wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”) and wrinkles at the top of the nose (“bunny lines”).
Hyaluronic acid replenishes lost volume in certain areas of the face, thereby reducing sagging and improving facial contour. It is often used to fill dark circles, cheekbones and lips and can also improve the contour of the nose and jaw. Although it can treat isolated areas of the face, it can also be used to harmonize the face as a whole, enhancing natural features and improving facial balance.

How long does Botox® last?
The duration of Botox wrinkle treatment® treatment can vary from person to person, but is on average 4 to 6 months. For permanent results, maintenance treatments should be carried out.
Care after treatment
Botox treatment® treatment has no recovery time, but it is important to take some precautions:
- Don't put your head down for 4 hours
- Avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours
- No physical exertion for 24 hours
- Do not massage the area where Botox® has been applied.

He obtained his Master’s degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine in Lisbon and then specialized in Otorhinolaryngology at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, where he joined the teaching staff as a free assistant. His training in Otorhinolaryngology had a strong component in head and neck surgery, but also in Rhinology, Otology and Pediatric Laryngology.
At the end of his internship, he dedicated himself to further training in functional and aesthetic surgery of the nose (Rhinoplasty and Rhino-septoplasty). During this time, he did an internship in head and neck oncology at the Otorhinolaryngology department of the IPO in Lisbon and an internship in otology and skull base at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Treating wrinkles with Botox® is a minimally invasive procedure with a very low risk of complications. The application of Botox® is very safe, generally well tolerated and complications are rare. However, small hematomas (bruises) and redness may appear in the most sensitive areas and disappear after a few days.
